2020-11-05: Mini-ITX

I had managed to source an RTX 3070 on launch day, which left me with a spare GTX 1070 Ti. Combined with the fact that I was spending most of my time at my parents' due to the lockdown, I decided to recycle the old GPU into a new, portable mini-PC.

The specs of this new PC were as follows:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • ASRock Fatal1ty B450 Gaming-ITX/ac
  • KFA2 GeForce GTX 1070 Ti EX (handed down from the main PC)
  • G.Skill 16 GB Ripjaws V, DDR4 3200 MHz, CL16 (now much cheaper than last time)
  • Fractal Design 500 W Ion SFX Gold
  • SilverStone SST-SG13B
  • WD 240 GB WD Green, 2.5″ (handed down from the main PC, turns out I never used the Linux side at all...)
  • Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 CPU cooler
  • Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM case fan

This all cost me 562.40 €. There was also a 2 TB HDD, but I cannot seem to find any record of buying it.

Here's a picture of the freshly-completed build:

The main anecdote I remember from the build process is that I mounted the CPU cooler in an unusual way. I laid the CPU cooler upside down on the table, applied thermal paste on the underside of the cooler, placed the mobo with the CPU already installed on top and finally screwed the cooler in place from behind.
