2023-02-15: Upgrades on the Shitbox Server

After building the Shitbox Server in November 2021, I had not really used it much as an actual server, since the main PC had more storage capacity than it. So, I decided to purchase a 4 TB SSD (a Samsung 870 EVO to be exact) for my freshly-built new main PC to replace the 6 TB HDD. The benefits were twofold:

  1. The day-to-day load speeds of the frequently accessed data on the storage drive would increase significantly, while simultaneously reducing the risk of mechanical failure – this was built to be portable after all…
  2. The old 6 TB HDD would be handed down to the server, making it surpass the main PC in storage capacity, which means I could start making mirroring backups onto the server with room to spare for other uses as well. Even though the main PC's capacity would shrink a bit, I was between 1 and 2 TB of actual data usage, so it shouldn't be an issue.

At the same time, I decided to do a cable management do-over on the server. Since there was no real place to mount a 2.5″ drive in the system, I decided to purchase a 240 GB mSATA drive and moved the contents of the boot drive there. This also freed up one SATA port on the motherboard, so I also bought a generic SATA DVD drive and installed it. I also placed the spare case fan from the old ITX build here, mainly to keep it in a known place rather than to cool.

Here's the side desk where the server setup lives together with my work laptop. They share the hand-me-down Apple Extended Keyboard II and Logitech G502 after they had been replaced with a SteelSeries Apex Pro and a Logitech G600 on the main desk, respectively.
